The Systems Security & Analysis program offers a robust education in information technology and cybersecurity. Throughout the program, students develop core competencies in networking, operating systems, and security principles, with courses in Linux and Windows administration, secure communications, perimeter defense, and intrusion detection to name a few. The program also covers essential business concepts for IT, culminating in a capstone security project that lets students apply their knowledge practically. By the time students complete the program, they will have over 1,000 hours of hands-on technical experience to enable them to apply their knowledge in real-world settings.

In addition to the core curriculum, students can choose electives in specialized areas, including Red Hat Ansible, Red Hat OpenShift, Ethical Hacking, Digital Forensics, Hardware/Software, Artificial Intelligence, and Machine Learning. This diverse elective selection allows students to tailor their learning toward specific interests and emerging technologies, making them well-prepared for a range of careers in cybersecurity and IT systems management. Yes! In addition to over 1,000 hours of hands-on learning integrated into the program, there are several work-based learning and internship opportunities. These include roles such as an Artificial Intelligence Data Labeling Technician (grant-funded), Jr. SOC Analyst, Mid-Carolina COG intern, and Instructional Lab Technician. New opportunities are added each semester to ensure students gain valuable, practical experience as part of their training in this program.

No, you do not need a personal laptop to complete this program. However, it’s essential to have access to a computer and a reliable internet connection, as most of our labs are cloud-based. For students who need access to a computer or additional support, we offer a student open lab in the General Classroom Building, Room 219, open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., where you can get tutoring and use PCs for your coursework.

Class sizes for on-campus courses typically do not exceed 25 students, while online courses may have up to 30 students. These smaller class sizes enable students to receive more personalized support and attention, encouraging a strong academic relationship between students and faculty.

During the application process, you will need to select program A25590S, Systems Security & Analysis (this program will be referenced as A25590CY, Cybersecurity, effective 2025FA for new students). Once you’ve completed the application process and submitted all transcripts, you will receive notice via email and mail of your acceptance into the program. From there, an advisor will be assigned to you and you can begin working with them to plan your courses!
