Competitive Admissions

A student must complete all pre-requisites and gain competitive points in order to apply for approval to the Surgical Technology program.
Once approved for a Health program, students will be provided with information regarding books, uniforms, supplies and equipment, and any additional program requirements.

As part of the competitive admissions process, each student is evaluated based on a point system.

Outcomes

Program Goals

  • To prepare entry-level Surgical Technologists who are competent in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains to enter the profession.
  • Apply knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, and Medical Terminology within the surgical environment.
  • Facilitate the surgical process by selecting sterile supplies, anticipating the needs of the surgeon, and assisting with perioperative duties.
  • Demonstrate professional responsibility in performance, attitude, and personal conduct
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the skills and procedures required of a surgical technologist in a professional/clinical setting

Program Outcomes

Upon completion of the Surgical Technology program, the student will know, understand, and be able to perform the following competencies:
  • Identify and interpret the Surgical Technologist job description with an understanding of their role in the health care system
  • Identify the purpose of management, and the physical environment of the hospital, including the operating room (OR), and its auxiliary departments
  • Describe the ethical,  moral, and legal responsibilities of the Surgical Technologist and the other members of the health care team
  • Explain body systems and medical terminology related to surgical anatomy and procedures
  • Discuss microbiology and wound healing as they pertain to the Surgical Technologist
  • Explain universal precautions, principles of sterilization, and its application in the operating room (OR)
  • Demonstrate a surgical scrub, donning a sterile gown and gloves, and maintaining a sterile field
  • Describe the operative sequence in the opening and closing of surgical wounds to include types of incisions and wound dressings
  • Identify surgical procedures in all basic surgical specialty areas including patient preparation, equipment, supplies, basic surgical instrumentation, purpose, and expected outcome
  • Explain the pharmacological ramifications and demonstrate the handling of drugs and anesthesia used in the surgical environment
  • Explain and demonstrate client care concepts for the surgical environment
  • Discuss and demonstrate personal and professional relationships and responsibilities

What to Expect:

Course Work

The Surgical Technology curriculum prepares individuals to assist in the care of the surgical patient in the operating room and to function as a member of the surgical team.
Students will apply theoretical knowledge to the care of patients undergoing surgery and develop skills necessary to:
  • Assist Surgeons During Operations
  • Maintain Aseptic Conditions
  • Prepare Patients for Surgery
  • Prepare Supplies, Equipment, and Instruments

Career Paths

Graduate are required to take the national certification exam administered by the NBSTSA (National Board on Certification in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting) within a four week period to or after graduation.

Associate Degree

Surgical Technology (A45740)

Program Length: 5 Semesters
Prerequisite: High School Diploma/GED, 1 Unit of Biology, ENG-025 or Placement Test Equivalent
Award: Associate in Applied Science

This is Advanced Placement, must currently be working as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST).
