Admissions Steps

Step: 1: Review Welcome Guide and Statement of Understanding

All students must complete the Admissions process in its entirety before being able to utilize VA Education benefits.

Step 2: Complete FTCC Admissions Application

This includes completing the Residency Determination System questionnaire to determine your tuition rate. If you are listed as an out-of-state student, veteran tuition waivers are available to qualifying students in their VSO student portal.

Step 3: Apply for VA Education Benefits

Be prepared to log in with an ID.me or DS Login. You should receive your certificate of eligibility (COE) from the VA in about 30 days.

Step 4: Submit Official Transcripts

All post-secondary and military transcripts must be submitted and evaluated in order to receive certification to the VA. Official transcripts can be submitted to admissions@faytechcc.edu. JST’s can be ordered from the link below.

Step 5: Apply for Financial Aid

Financial aid can be used in addition to your VA education benefits. FTCC code is 007640. Complete your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) here:

Step 6: Take the placement test if applicable

Not everyone needs to take a placement test. If you graduated high school more than 10 years ago, or have never completed college level Math and English, please contact testing@faytechcc.edu to see if you need to test.

Step 7: Register for Classes

FTCC will notify you by mail with your student ID number and default password within 2-3 business days of acceptance. Letter will include instructions on setting up your Email, Self-Service, and Blackboard. Use FTCC Self-Service to register for your classes. Contact your advisor for registration assistance. Step 8: Log in to VSO Student Portal

Your VSO student portal allows students to submit their documents and request certification in one secure platform. The enrollment certification request form is required every semester you wish to use your benefits. You will use your FTCC log in and password.

Since SVA’s founding in 2008, over one million veterans have returned home to pursue a post-secondary degree or certificate using VA education benefits. To meet this need, SVA’s presence at the local and national levels has grown to include over 1,100 chapter affiliates, numerous private and nonprofit partners, and most importantly, an expanding list of impactful programs and services for veterans. The nation’s renewed focus on veteran welfare has ignited change on campuses and in congress. SVA is committed to capitalizing on this momentum to ensure today’s and tomorrow’s veterans are supported in their transition to education and employment. If you are a veteran, active duty service member, spouse, or dependent attending FTCC, you are already a member of our SVA chapter. Through fundraising for veteran scholarships and volunteering in the community, we strive to give back and create a welcoming environment for veterans on campus. We invite you to participate!

History

In 1944 President Franklin Roosevelt signed in to law the Serviceman’s Readjustment Act of 1944, otherwise known as the G.I. Bill of Rights. When service members returned home from conflicts overseas, they flooded schools to use these new educational benefits. The schools were not prepared for the influx of enrollment and did not know how to deal with the enrolled veteran students. It was a hard transition period for veterans returning home. Student veterans banded together to form peer-to-peer support groups. Through the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s this trend continued. In 2001 veterans begin using social media to communicate across campuses nationwide. In 2008 the organization Student Veterans of America was formed.

Veteran Success on Campus

FTCC’s Veteran Success on Campus counselor, April Riley, is an excellent resource for any student using VA Education and Employment benefits. She is assigned to help veterans, dependents, and spouses succeed and provide resources, education counseling services, and VR&E services to our students.
