Baseball hosted Pitt Community College in a three-game conference series this past weekend at JP Riddle Stadium. The Trojans took two of three games from the Bulldogs winning the series with an unbelievable comeback in game three. 

FTCC vs. Pitt Community College (0-8, Loss / 5-2, Win / 12-11, Win)

Game One, 0-8 (8-innings)

The Bulldogs scored early and the Trojans were never able to get a run across the plate to get back in it and the game ended early in eight innings.

Jaylon Woodley (Courtland, VA) led the offense for the Trojans. He was 2-4 with a double and had a stolen base. 

The Trojans used three arms in game one. Tanner McNeal (Currituck County, NC) started on mound followed by Brett Alvis (Hanover, VA) and Hunter Beard (Spring Lake, NC).

 

Game Two, 5-2

The Trojans responded in game two scoring first and never losing their lead. 

The first run was scored in the bottom of the first inning when Woodley led off with a single and advanced to second base on a passed ball. Drew Canody (Tampa, FL) hit a single to left field to score Woodley from second base. 

The Trojans scored two more runs in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, Markey Purvis (Bennettsville, SC) and Zavion Ingram (Clayton, NC) drew back to back walks. Raymond Humphrey (Orlando, FL) singled up the middle to earn one RBI and put runners on second and first base for the Trojans. With two outs, Woodley put a hard ground ball in play and reached on a Bulldogs error to plate one more Trojan run. 

The Bulldogs brought the game within two runs when they got on the scoreboard in the top of third inning, but were not able to score again until the seventh. 

In the bottom of the fourth, the Trojans scored two more runs on two hits. Humphrey walked with one out before Woodley and Canody hit back to back singles to increase their lead to 5-1. 

The Bulldogs earned one more run in the top of the seventh on a solo homerun before the third out of the inning to end the game. 

Caleb Holland (Fayetteville, NC) pitched a complete seven innings for the Trojans. He gave up four hits and two runs while striking out four and allowing no walks. 

 

Game Three, 12-11

Game three was a pitcher’s dull up until the top of the sixth inning when Pitt broke out scoring three runs to take the lead. The Bulldogs continued to score multiple runs every inning after that until the Trojans made a 10-run comeback in the bottom of the ninth inning. 

The Trojans got on top early scoring one run in the bottom of the first inning when Canody hit a one out single and scored later that inning on a passed ball. 

The Bulldogs tied the game back up at one in the top of the second, but the Trojans took the lead again in the third. Derrick Hall (Fayetteville, NC) led off with a single followed by a Bulldog error allowing Hall to advance to third base. He scored off a ground ball hit by Woodley before the third out. 

The Trojans then went scoreless from the fourth inning, while Pitt put up ten runs. 

The Bulldogs led by nine runs before the Trojans come up for their last at bat. 

Mason Turner (Lexington, SC) led the inning off with a single to get the energy going for the Trojans. Holland walked and Ingram singled to load the bases with no outs. Zamar Lewis (Dublin, NC) pinch hit and put a hard ground ball in play to force the defense to make to field it and reached on an error, two runs scored for the Trojans. Wilmer Cuevas (Brentwood, NY) hit a single to center field to keep the rally going and reload the bases with no outs. Hall and Devin Outlaw (Jacksonville, FL) drew back to back walks to put the Trojans within five. Woodley put the ball in play and the Bulldogs threw to get the lead runner at home plate, but overthrew the catcher. Canody walked and Turner hit for the second time in the inning and walked, loading the bases for the Trojans still with no outs, down by two runs. Holland hit a double down the left field line to tie the game at 11. Ingram hit his second single of the inning up the middle to walk the game off for the Trojans. They scored ten runs in the bottom of the ninth still having three outs to work with. 

Rob Willis (Montgomery, AL) started on the bump for the Trojans throwing 5.1 innings. He gave up four hits and three earned runs with five strikeouts. Ben Rohrbach (Stafford, VA), Payton Jernigan (Dunn, NC) and Jack Anderson (Saint Simmons Island, GA) all threw in relief for the Trojans.

The Trojans are back at home this Wednesday, March 20 at 5pm as they host Methodist University-JV. They are on the road this weekend as they head to Brunswick for their next conference series.
