Volleyball traveled to Monroe University in New Rochelle, New York to open their season. They played four games, two against Raritan Valley, who they beat twice, and once against Montgomery Community College and, host, Monroe University.
In game one against Montgomery Community College, the Trojans dropped the first three sets to lose their opening game. Delaney Brooms (Robbinsville, NC) and Rosa Harris (Irving, TX) each had eight kills to start off their freshman season. Ella Ferrie (Stanchfield, MN) led the Trojans with 14 digs and Bella Finelli (Pembroke, NC) added 13. Gabby Walters (Salemburg, NC) and Madi Harmon (Fayetteville, NC) split the setting time allowing them both to earn 13 assists for their team.
Game two, the Trojans took set one and ran from there, defeating Raritan Valley 3-0. Brooms and Ferrie led the Trojan offense with nine kills each, while Finelli took care of the defense with 13 digs. Again, Walters and Harmon set up their team for success with a combined 26 assists.
The Trojans took that same energy into Saturday when they faced Raritan Valley again at 9am. Ferrie led the offense with seven kills, this time with Harris who also had seven kills. Walters played defense this game with nine digs and also had four service aces, while Harmon took over the offense finishing the game with 16 assists.
In game four, the Trojans took on the Mustangs of Monroe University. The Mustangs came out on top in the first three sets, handing the Trojans their second loss of the invitational. Harris led the offense with five kills and Harmon had seven assists. Addie Hudson (Wade, NC) earned three service aces for the Trojans.
After opening weekend, the Trojans have a lot of freshman that stepped up to start the season. Brooms is leading the team with 25 kills while, returner, Finelli is holding up the defense with 39 digs.
Volleyball travels to Patrick & Henry Community College for their next match on Thursday, September 5 at 6pm.
