FTCC vs. Wake Tech- Monday, February 5 (74-63, Win)
The Lady Trojans matched up again with Wake Tech Community College on Monday night. The teams played back in November with FTCC losing a nail biter, by only three points. Winning eight games since then, the Trojans gained some experience to pull out a big win over the Eagles.
The Trojans were on top to start when the Eagles started to make a little run. Nyla Mitchell (Lumberton, NC) was fouled putting back up an offensive rebound to stop their momentum. She stepped to the line and made one of her free throws giving the Trojans a 6-4 advantage. The Trojans made a run for themselves when Tara Joyner (Clinton, NC) made two back to back three-pointers making the score 13-6.
With 4:25 left in the first quarter, Joyner had a nice defensive steal and took the ball all the way to the basket to layup an easy two points, adding to the Trojan lead. Forward, Joy Ezeh (Abuja, Nigeria), had two back to back rebounds resulting in her adding four more points to the scoreboard. With 40 seconds left, Danielle Jackson (Raleigh, NC) had a huge block to get the ball back. The ball made its way to Mitchell who hit one foul shot to end the first quarter with a 24-13 Trojan lead.
To start the second quarter, Wake Tech scored a quick basket and Joyner responded with another three-pointer. The game was quiet until Luisa Monsalve (Colombia) took a huge offensive charge to save a basket for the Eagles.
The game went scoreless until 5:43 left in the second quarter, when Carly Hammonds (Lumberton, NC) stepped up and hit a three, making it 30-16 Trojans.
The Trojans held the Eagles to 16, getting a few more baskets from Jackson and Monsalve. The quarter again ended with some free throws, this time by Joyner. She made one to give the Trojans a 38-23 lead at halftime.
Mitchell came out hot after the break, scoring a quick two points followed by free throws and technical foul shots. The ball got back to Joyner who made two back to back shots for the Trojans forcing Wake Tech to use a timeout when the lead got to 47-31.
After two timeouts, Ezeh had a huge block to save a shot and bring the momentum back to the Trojan side. She had two offensive rebounds in a row, scoring four points to end the third quarter. Trojans were heading into the fourth with a 53-46 lead over the Eagles.
Joyner scored a quick two-pointer to start the last quarter before Wake Tech made a huge run to bring the game within one point.
Hammonds was fouled with seven minutes left, the score 55-54 Trojans. She hit her second free throw and made another basket to gain three more points before Ezeh was fouled putting back an offensive rebound.
The Trojans start to pull away with Joyner’s six points within 30 seconds. Trojans get the win 74-63 over Wake Tech.
